 Communications Tech I Job Description:

General Purpose: Assists with all functions related to RUC’s Communication Department as directed by the department supervisor.


 Works under the direction of the Information Technology-Metering Supervisor and the Communications Tech II. Will also be required to answer to other supervisors as directed by the Information Technology-Metering Supervisor.

Supervisory Responsibilities:  None.

Essential Functions:

These duties shall be performed while maintaining and enforcing a very high standard of safety and workmanship.

-Promotes positive customer service relations through daily interactions with customers encountered in the field or work place along with displaying a positive attitude and work ethic in cooperating with RUC and fellow employees.

– Performs related work as required.

-Overtime/on-call duties will be required as directed by supervisor.

-Have a neat appearance and positive attitude while performing duties for RUC.

Representative Duties:

-Install, operate, troubleshoot, and maintain overhead and underground fiber optic cables and equipment of the communication distribution and service system, in both active and inactive conditions. Duties included, but are not limited to: installation and removal of fiber optic cable and associated communications equipment, trenching, setting of conduit, pedestals, and handholes, pulling, splicing, terminating, and locating of fiber cable. Installs service equipment.

-Assists with the collection of delinquent accounts through disconnections as required. Reports material, labor, field mapping and property changes, terminations, etc…as related to daily work performed in a complete and timely manner.

-Assists with the installation, troubleshooting, repair, and restoration of communications cables and related electronic equipment in both indoor and outdoor environments.

-Assists with the layout, assignment, installation, and documentation of fiber optic for new distribution feeds and service drops.

-Assists and instructs customers as to the use of installed CPE (customer premise equipment). Assistance may be on-site or by telephone.

-Perform facility locates.

-Assist with routine reporting of material, time, field mapping changes and system documentation. Works to insure job order material and time are reported in a complete and timely manner.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit; bend, twist; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or control; talk, hear; reach with hands and arms. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to lift, carry, push, pull, and/or move up to 75 pounds in weight. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be required to perform other manual labor. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, the ability to adjust focus, and the ability to discern colors.

Must be available for on-call after hour work as determined by the Utility.

Any offer of employment will be contingent upon the satisfactory completion of a physical exam and drug test.

Mental Requirements:

Position requires the ability to plan and organize, as well as the ability to read and perform basic mathematical computations. The position also requires the ability to clearly and coherently communicate using a verbal and written form of the English language.

Work Environments:

Work includes both inside and outside environments, in varying temperatures and conditions. Exposure to low voltage hazardous electrical surroundings and fast moving vehicles.

Equipment Used:

Communications trade tools, fiber splice and test equipment, computers, light vehicle, trencher, hand tools, power tools, 2-way communications radio, safety equipment and devices.

Education and Experience:

Post high school education and/or related practical work experience in the following areas: telephone, video/RF systems and processes, fiber optic cable splicing, working knowledge of PC/computers/networks and applications, contemporary electronics theory.

Position may be required to attend and complete training relating to modern communications theory and practice as determined by RUC.

Must hold a valid Wisconsin driver’s license and be able to obtain a valid Wisconsin CDL.


Hourly position with the wage based on qualifications, attitude and work ethic. On-call per Personnel Handbook. Clothing allowance received per Personnel Handbook.
