Commercial Pricing Options & Credits

Managing the demand for electricity when temperatures fluctuate to either extreme is critical to maintaining a reliable and affordable power supply. Large power customers who have the ability to either turn on backup generation or shift energy usage and turn off equipment for brief stretches of time, can reduce their monthly power costs while helping to ensure electric reliability during peak demand periods.

Our Capacity and Curtailable Capacity programs provide participating businesses with a financial incentive to reduce the strain on the electric system when the demand and price for power surges. By adding capacity or shedding load upon request during high-demand periods, customers can save money on their energy bill while allowing utilities to reduce peaks and control their costs by delaying the need to build costly generation.

Capacity Program
Some commercial and industrial facilities depend on backup power generation in emergency situations to maintain critical business operations. Fortunately, these backup generators are seldom needed, and as a result can also offer valuable peaking power benefits. Participants agree to make their backup unit available as a generating resource on request. This allows an untapped resource to be used during periods of high demand, while your business gets additional return on investment.

Our power supplier, WPPI, will make monthly payments to participating businesses with eligible generators 500 kW or larger. Participants must be able to bring their interconnected generator online within 30 minutes notice during periods of high demand. Note: You will be compensated for the fuel needed to power the unit when called into service.

Curtailable Capacity Program
Large power customers who have the ability to shift energy usage and turn off equipment for brief stretches of time can reduce their monthly power costs while helping to ensure electric reliability during peak demand periods. To be eligible, customers must have an average peak monthly demand of at least 1000 kW and be able to shed a minimum of 500 kW of electrical demand when notified. Participants contract directly with our power supplier, WPPI Energy, for 5 or 10 years.

By shedding load upon request, businesses can save money on their energy bills while allowing Reedsburg Utility to reduce critical demand peaks and control costs. In exchange for reducing consumption during certain peak periods, participants receive a payment each month regardless of whether or not participants are actually called upon to reduce their energy use.
